My daughter went to Tasmania and saw some of these.
This is what they sound like. It's maybe not so difficult to see where the term "devil" comes from!

Now on the endangered list, because of the ravages of devil facial tumour disease. Though recent reports suggest that, in an evolutionary response to the onset of the disease in two- and three-year old animals, mating is starting to occur at an earlier age.
